Recently I saw a Linkedin question that was very relevant to Start ups specially prior to launching their CrowdFunding campaign .
Maria wrote : Hello, I am quite new in the SEO world, I am running a startup with my husband, I am wondering if you can give me any advance to get a higher page rank! Thank you!
I saw many good comments ( see attached ) .
Ok, a good question.
I am a SEO researcher . I get calls to my office ( inbound call ) from people and agenccies that want to do SEO for us . My 1st question is what city they are in and then does their name or website are on 1st page of Google (1st to 3rd positions) ?
If not , I ask them to go back and do their own homework first . I also ask them why they use the phone ( outbound ) to sell " internet marketing" ( in bound ) .. That is kind of an oxymoron.
Professional SEO companies send me report about all the problems with my websites , they call it wordy , not good structure and confusing . In reality many of our websites are on the 1st page of Google for our to 20 key phrases. In Reality , we get 5 to 10 leads a day that about 20% turn to be business ( Conversion = Click to $ ) . We also see avrage time spent on our site is 5 minues .. Then either they are missing somthing or we are extremly lucky .
Try Crowd Funding consulting , Crowd Funding consultant , Crowd Funding mentors,
CrowdFunding coaches, CrowdFunding conference or CrowdFunding planning .....
You see our webportal that has to do with CrowdFunding conulting and CrowdFunding help http://goo.gl/gdoyA
These are what we recommend . It works but it requires energy and research ; no short cuts
1- Use Google Fabric to build your website . ( Google Sites ) - Google likes Google
2- This way your data is in Google's data centers and you can update without uploading and downloading
3- There is no cost to using Google sites
4- To us Google ranking is all about Content, Content and high quality content
5- Do your research and find all relevant keywords and phrases. Make sure you get relevant information on daily bases based on these keywords. Blog them at the start but within 6 months you can generate your own Original content since 6 months of relevant reading make you a relevant expert and a blogger .
6- Read the comments listed and experiment with them .
Make sure you back link all the relevant key phrases to your pages . This way you offer valuable information and train Google Bot to understand your website and pages are about your Key phases.
Then go out bound and register to as many as Relevant social media marketing as you can and also Join as many Relevant online communities . For the 1st, six (6 ) months just, say hello ( Likes, +1, ...etc. ) , the start publishing your original blogs into your own community and comment on others . Be friendly and informative . Try to be part of the solution . Remember the golden rule or the secret => Power = ( Knowledge ) ^ shared ( ^ = to the power of ).
The more relevant knowledge you share to more Friends and trust ( Likes ) you get . As you practice here,”expert source” your questions . You never know , you might run to people that like to share .Last but the most important point . SEO starts with an “S” . You need to master the knowledge of search in order to be able to optimize it . Learn as much as you can . Following link contain 260 pages of search tips and it is an internal document of NSA ( national Security agency ) that was published and shared with public two weeks ago . Read it , then read it again . For the NSA Search document just type NSA on the above search and click on the result .
Rajnish sharma • Welcome Maria
If you want to get high page rank on search engine then you have to create quality and unique content to your sites. If you need to discuss any topic related to seo .
Tina Holtz • Maria, I agree with Rajnish that quality content is most important. I can refer a great book for you The Zen of Social Media Marketing by Shama Hyder Kabani. She goes through wonderful techniques that can help you. I would first recommend that you do a keyword search with google for keywords that pertain to your industry and then ensure that you have those keywords in the content as well.
John Scott • Hi Maria,
Congrats on the startup. There are different approaches to gaining SEO authority for your startup's digital presence. The first question I would ask you as a marketing professional would be what is your startup's business model - this narrows down what specific approach you need to initially take. Next would naturally be, what are your marketing goals as a business and who is your target audience? Depending on your business model, goals, and audience, and being that there are a few strategies to successful SEO, answering those questions first will allow me to frame a sound strategy and approach with you.
Creating quality and unique content is the cornerstone of any sound SEO strategy, there are also varying approaches that are strategic to gaining a higher SEO presence wrapped around quality and unique content to take your SEO efforts to the next level; some deploy in different stages of the process and again that depends on your business model, goals, and audience. Some approaches may not be as relevant depending on these answers.
María Cascante • Hello!!
Thank you very much for your replies and your desire to help me.
Our business is a chess website, users can play chess online with other people around the world. You can have a look at the site chessheroes.com, this is still in open beta, there are somethings that are broken but we are working fixing the bugs. Our first goal is to generate more traffic, people that stays in the site to play with other people.
Paul Firestine • You have lots of potential just need some content on there and focus on the key on-page touch points. I would say w/ that type of site growing the traffic is going to be the key to long term success. I would suggest picking up your social pages if you haven't already b/c I don't see any links to them from your website.
Tony Burt • Two issues you might consider.
Firstly you have gone for a very minimalist style that can look quite elegant but doesn't give much scope for meaningful content. There is always a battle between sleek, graphics-heavy pages that look great but don't get traffic and clunky, wordy pages that rank well but don't look so good. Bear that one in mind.
Secondly you may be hiding much good content behind your login. Better to let visitors enter the system, see what is there, without login, and then get them to login to participate.
Mark Kithcart • SEO is one slice of the traffic pie (search & PPC traffic), Social Media is another slice, Channel partner opportunities another etc. This is a body of knowledge that in many cases depends on your goals and your target market.
The website is another issue and as Tony mentioned. When I went to your site I had no idea why the site was going to benefit me as a chess player. People what to know "whats in it for them" and will make a decision based on a few split seconds of looking at your site. I understand the roadblock to get access; however, it can also be a deterrent as people don't want to have to log in to another site. Also if possible use facebook or Google to login and get members - its easier.
I could go on but will end up writing a book - which I have already done :)
Rakesh Ojha • @ Maria I'd recommend focusing on bringing in quality traffic and conversions as PR won't have any effect on your business directly.
Have good contents on the site, link up to quality websites as with latest Google updates, things are different these days and site with low content quality and linking to bad neighborhood sites will be hit hard.
María Cascante • Thank you all for your advice! I will have all of this in mind. Have a great weekend!!
John Clarke • Maria, you have several people giving you good advise, read them carefully and ask questions on items you don't understand. You will hear many different opinions and in time you will have your own. SEO is not just a science, there's what some would consider an artist aspect also.
One of the SEO tools (free) that I built and use is http://www.seowebpage.info/
John Furlong • Try to get some links from Game news sites and aggregators. That will get you pre-qualified traffic. Also see if you can get links up at BoardGameGeek.com
Steve Link • I am also interested in enhancing my search ranking and appreciate all of the advice. I have started seo-semarketing and trying to soak up additional knowledge to enhance my capabilities.
John Clarke • Steve, I ran you website on my SEO tool http://www.seowebpage.info/ and noticed some things:
- Your site is about search engine marketing and optimization but you do not use "SEO" once on your page?
- You do not have a description meta tag so you are letting search engines assume the description of your web site
- <h> tags have a meaning, you are missing <h1> but start with <h2>, are you using <h> tags for style instead of what they were designed for?
- Why do you start your title with "http://"
Just some items for discussion
Peter Nguyen • I highly recommend you to work with an Internet marking consultant who understands design, SEO, copywriting, social media marketing, conversion optimization, and paid advertising.
It's so worth it to work with a good consultant that can put together a holistic marketing strategy for you. I've seen many newbies who attempt to do SEO themselves and get it all wrong most of the time.
SEO is not about doing one or two things. It encompasses everything you do in marketing, including design, userability, content, social media promotion, link building, PR, and the technical aspects of HTML, web server, etc.
María Cascante • John Clarke, thank you for your comment, I have used your SEO tool and found very interesting information that I can use to improve our website.
Peter Nguyen, thank you for your advise, It would be great for our website to work directly with an Internet marketing consultant, but since we are a startup we don't have the budget for this. I am interesting in SEO and want to learn it well to apply the knowledge in our website.
Manish Agarwal • Checked your website and found:
Speed of loading pages is excellent
Security features are loaded
On-page SEO content is good
Most of things are good..
Prefer .com domain than .info (which would not put dent in your budget)
Work on keywords section on your site
Alejandro Buendia • Maria, it might take you some time to get up to speed. I would suggest that since time might be of the essence, you start with an expert while you learn the ropes. What kind of biz are you launching?
Pranas B. • Back to the basics. Page Rank mostly depends on inbound link mass and also age of the domain. Assuming the question about page rank.
María Cascante • Alejandro, we have launched a chess website, chessheroes.com
Jose Barrios • I have been in your position owning a commercial cleaning business. Keeping it affordable... Highly recommend you hire someone (SEO company) to make sure your websites "backend" is agreeable for google and web crawlers. Also have them research the key words you should focus on. Start a blog on the topic and you should see your rankings greatly improve. You can do much more SEO but the above is the fundamentals find a SEO company that is willing to teach you the critical parts you need and just as importantly can afford.
Alexandra Shkalikova • Congratulations on your startup! As everyone's already said, you need content that is valuable to people. However this alone rarely brings in top rankings (unless you're probably Wikipedia). In a few words, the steps would be:
1) Research keywords to find the ones that are not too competitive (i.e. Easier to outrank other sites) and that are still quite frequently searched.
2) Use these keywords in your site's content. Sometimes you're even creating pages with the main purpose of targeting certain groups of keywords (but useful to visitors, of course).
3) Try to get links to your pages. These should be all kinds of links, text links and images. Also many of them should use your keywords in the anchor text (the visible text of the link) yet many should be just "naked" URL or links like "click here", "learn more" etc.
4) In the meantime, it would be useful to create a sitemap and submit it to search engines (search for "submit site to Yahoo" for example) to get your site indexed.
5) Another thing to look at is structure, coding, HTTP response codex and other issues that might be important for the site's indexation and rankings.
If you need some initial guidance on all these aspects the best place to refer to is SEO in Practice here http://www.seoinpractice.com It doesn't give you in-depth advice, but it's an ideal one to get you going and explain things clearly and tell you what to do, step by step.
kevin Bunn • When i started my business in 2007 i did not know where to start regarding SEO , so my advise would be to shop around and find yourself a good company to manage your advertising, people used to say to me "you should do it yourself its easy" but its only easy if your in front of a computer all day long, personally i have to be on site wining work. "Good Luck Maria " !
Rakesh Ojha • Being a start up your focus should be on your business and how to grow. Initially your business requires a push and if you were to hire a SEO agency, it would give you that push.
Replying solely on your SEO won't help much in the long run.
I wish you luck in your business.
Sarah Bernier • Congrats, Maria! My husband and I are doing the same thing (started about a year and a half ago). What's your website?
peter ogilvie • If you want to understand how it all works then (as other have said) read chapter by chapter of the http://www.seoinpractive.com online book - it will detail all you need to know.
Then look at something like powersuite - http://www.link-assistant.co.uk - you need to do these things - in depth Keyword Research , make sure your site is optimised for those keywords and then look at the competition to see where they get links from.
Also something which is much more relevant -in my opinion - is social media - use something like buzzbundle to find out where your potential customers are - and then engage with them.
By the way - above all else - make sure your site is relevant and up to date and delivers what customers want - otherwise visitors that arent happy wont purchase and potential sales wont convert to actual sales - but I'm sure you know that already - good luck with it all - hope it goes great for you.
ps - I would add - although increasing Page Rank is good - it's not the end of the world if it doesnt. Sales conversions are the bottom line.
Martin Miller • First decision needs to be how involved you want to be in improving your sites page rank. If SEO isn't your main area of expertise then why would you even think about covering it yourself. I never work on my car, I've never spent years learning how to, I just stick it in the garage when it needs servicing.
Then what do you mean by page rank? Google SERPS rank or Google PR?
What is the goal for your web site? Do you want to sell something, attract new email subscribers, get your point of view over to as large an audience as possible? As with all planning, start with the goal and the planning becomes a lot easier and a lot less like guess work.
What search terms are you looking to rank well for? Choosing the right search terms/keywords to go after is the main part of the battle. Choosing more specific less general search terms allows you to rank your pages a little easier. (Think rank for dog training for Alsatian pups as opposed to dogs). Careful planning in this area with a professional will set you up for successful rankings.
Page rank requires good relevant content, good site structure (interlinking pages), good on page SEO, good of page SEO (good backlinking) and most of all a good SEO professional to keep this all going while you concentrate on running your business and making enough money to afford the good SEO professional! :)
María Cascante • Wooww!! Thank you very much to all of you to for the great advises! I really appreciate your help!!
Sarah, we have launched a chess website to play online with a touch of social network, you can visit us at chessheroes.com
Martin, I am thinking of Google PR, our goal is to get more traffic to the website.
John Clarke • Maria, there's a lot of good information here and some are recommending services that they provide.
But there are new businesses that do not have the start up funds to start in the ideal world, only you will know the many factors.
I know of a website that is listed on the first page of Google for many search terms (key words), it didn't have any links to it (for a year, it now does), with a PR of zero, one page only, didn't use any social media. So it broke many SEO things that people say you must do (at the time).
It did have a good url, the content was about one subject, there was a sitemap (one url), robots.txt file, favicon and it played by the rules, the search engine rules.
Here's a link to Google rules http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769
In fairness, the site was something people were interested in and searching for but there were not the 10,000 other sites all trying to present the same content.
Keep up your research, don't chase the latest trends, keep to the basics, build a good site with good content. Monitor your site with Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics.
As your business grows bring in the people with the knowledge that you don't have.
Sarah Bernier • Chess! That's awesome! I tell people I used to think I was good at chess
until I played people who were actually good at chess. What an eye opener!
I'm sure you already have a few ideas about seo. What do have in the works
I'm not an seo expert, but we're getting 30k unique visitors a month after
a year and a half, so I can only tell you what's worked an not worked for
us. Are you writing content yet? Articles about chess, chess strategy,
history of chess, chess resources, current events that relate to chess etc?
I know this isn't meant to be the point of your website, but optimized
content is one major way that new traffic finds you.
Sent from my iPhone
Chad VanCalster • I haven't read all the replies, but I've been doing SEO since the 90's and I can tell you we haven't seen a shift as big as what's happening now.
If you want to get found: Content, Content, Content. Focus on driving traffic and building your social media brand. Those will trump all others.
We focus on traffic - and Page Rank is a byproduct of good traffic.
Pavan Pratap Singh • Dear Maria, Congrats for new start up. Doing SEO starts with making a SEO friendly website so your first step to look in your website and to analyse if you have used proper Title ,description, Tags etc.You can easily find the method to do proper on page on Google.. After it , you need to look who all are you competitors and from where they are getting traffic, what all keywords they are ranking on. Once you finalized the keywords and understand the target audience then you can use back linking, blogs , articles etc as described by people above. The only thing you need to make sure , you should have activity list handy before you start doing SEO so that you can follow them religiously. SEO is a continuous process so you need to be patient and keep on doing efforts , I am sure you get start getting results.
Dina Becerra • John- thanks for sharing your site. I've checked a few of my websites and there is a lot of useful information, including things I need to work on. Very much appreciated!
Gokuldas K • Hello Maria,
Congratulations for your new start up.
As it is a new site, there are lot of things need to take care. I am open to discuss few very important SEO points with you. You can email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can work for a month for free and let see the results!
Pavan Pratap Singh • Certainly Page speed does matter. You need to make sure the coding of your website is done accordingly.Try avoiding Flash, Heavy files and long coding to get good page speed.
John Clarke • Thank you Dina Becerra, glad to be able to help.
Gjivan Shrestha • Providing value which indeed helps the needy community is the keypoint to become successful in any offline as well as online business. PAGE RANKING is just a part of it. So, quality content with consistency will definitely attract more readers which in turn increase the rank of your page as, frequent discussion, lengthy visit duration of a page, more social sharing are some factors determining the PAGE RANK and overall status of your site!!
Martin Miller • Wow what a response Maria, what have you started?!
Loads of great advice here. Think about what you are trying to achieve with your web site and set some performance goals. Then read through all above and set some activity goals to help you achieve them.
Good luck and have fun!
Gjivan Shrestha • And yes definitely, page speed of a webpage also is a determinant factor, so if you are just starting up, i recommend you to use professional and seo friendly CMS platform; wordpress and theme; themes by genesis framework!! Good luck
Gaurav Mishra • HI Maria How are you well please send me all the details regarding your website on my mail id that is ---- so that we can study and can understand your requirements and can work further with you. It will be our pleasure to work with you
Thomas Sigmund Warda • Hey Maria...you shouldn't be focusing on a higher ranking....but rather on generating more revenue through your current website.
srikanth chary • Welcome To Seo Filed Maria, first thing is maintain quality page rank submissions to get good traffic to your site and maintain a blog on your website with daily are weekly updates.
quality is very important thing in seo for a website do not approach low page rank sites. Good Luck........,
Lee Benning • I haven't read everyone of the tips above, but here's 5 quick ones to get you going:
1. Search for [google keyword tool] and use that to see which phrases have the highest search volumes
2. Use the keywords with the highest volumes in the <title> tags of RELEVANT web pages
3. Create an XML sitemap (search online for [xml sitemap generator]) and upload to your web server
4. Create a Google and Bing Webmaster Tools account and submit your XML sitemap
5. Submit your URL to relevant web directories - search for [seo web directory list] to find a list of web directories
Let me know if that helps.
Mark Kaplan • My sites are at the top of Google. My surf lesson page, for one, is on top and the source of my lessons. There are some rules. You could down load my Free E Book on Getting to Page One Google at http://MarkKKaplan.com
Hazel O'Brian • Congrats Maria for your new site..
I would like to suggest you:
1. You have to fix the Onpage first for your website. For eg. Meta tag, Meta Keywords, Site Map
2. Add some relevant contents in your pages.
3. Generate some links which relevant to games for getting your targeted audience.
Let me know if you need any further help.
John McCarthy • Congratulations Maria, If you just started a business that means you have a lot to do. You could gather a lot of SEO advice (such as you are attempting here) and begin to put those suggestions into place but that will take a lot of your time so you will not be doing what you need to do for your business to succeed. Yes, SEO is one of those things that needs doing but the other things like, establishing a business plan and working it, establishing a corporate marketing plan and working it, establishing vendor services, establishing a customer/client database. There are way more things you should be spending time doing than you will be spending on SEO. So how do you succeed on the web when you are busy doing all those other things? Find and hire a trustworthy, dependable, hardworking 3rd party provider who knows what you need, understands your marketing plan and does nothing else but eat, sleep, live and die by their reputation as a web marketing provider. It may cost more than is comfortable up front but in the long run you will succeed and keep succeeding. Don't look for a cheap quick solution either, go for someone who takes the time to understand your needs and put a plan together to succeed. Good luck on your new business venture and good luck finding a reputable, hard working, no short cuts 3rd party web marketing vendor.
Graham Freer • Sorry to butt into this conversation, but I, too, am new to what I had always considered to be one of the black arts! Mind if I look over your shoulder?
I'm planning to offer myself as a website content writer, if there's any advice available, ou there.
Chad VanCalster • Graham,
That's a great market to get into right now. People need content, therefore need people to write it for them.
My advice is you need to write creatively, especially when it comes to titling your articles and writing your Tweets/Facebook posts. The Good/Bad of such a need for good content, is there is lots of good content already out there, as other businesses are doing it too. To add value to your clients, you need to write to get their content heard above the noise.
Gina Fiedel • Hi Maria,
This is a huge area you are entering into and my advice is to enter cautiously. Before you consider hiring a vendor to perform SEO for your company, it's important to educate yourself somewhat.
There are still a lot of vendors and SEOs that are executing less than safe and definitely not at all safe practices when it comes to things like linkbuilding, article submission etc. Anyone who makes promises or guarantees is someone to steer clear of.
There are many aspects to SEO including: on-site optimization, content marketing, social media, PPC, analytics and many aspects within each of those.
I recommend going to http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo and reading their beginner instruction guides to get a general lay of the land. You can also consider joining seomoz and learn even more as well as getting reports of your site's performance etc.
I recently posted an article about black hat SEO and things to avoid here: bit.ly/ZYQ7TW that might be helpful to you.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck to you!
SEOHelpz .com • 1. Make sure your on page is done correctly , title , description , h1,h2 tags etc ete.
2, Identify your keywords , don't go behind heavy keywords initially. Spend some time on keyword research
3. Be social
4. Do some offpage SEO,
Gjivan Shrestha • Nice advices to take.... But keep in mind, patience and determination is the foundation of every business before it worth a million dollar one!!
Mike Kristiansen • I took down a 3yr old site and rebuilt it a month ago, it was ranked by Alexa.com at just under 3 million and the bounce rate was quite high. I rebuilt the site on Wordpress and I've only added some of the old content after doing a rewrite. However, when I began syndicating content, the site jumped over 2 million sites, the average time spent on the site is sixteen minutes. This is a huge turnaround from the previous site.http://netmorenow.com
Chad VanCalster • That's a great example, Mike. I'd love to hear about the changes you made and why you think they were the cause of benefit.
Vikas Dhiman • SEO is subject in itself and you will come across blogs, forums, articles and more that talks about strategies, methods, do's and don'ts. We all have different perspective on how SEO should be done. As per my experience, it should be as natural as promoting a product in a normal manner. I believe that is what Google is looking for now. Like you all said unique content this is one part but where your links are coming from? How are you making them to make your presence? These things plays an important role too. I believe while doing SEO concentrate making links on High PR sites. It would take time but your patience will get its "Treat."
To know more about SEO write to me at email@example.com
Mike Kristiansen • Very good Vikas, linking authority sites to the website especially in-content is valuable. Your own unique content is important, but curating relevant content has proven to me to drive traffic and keep visitors on the site longer. It's hard for a website owner to come up with all their own unique content and then syndicate it. Adding curated content that keeps people on your site longer by enriching the overall experience I believe is a key factor to developing reader interest and becoming an authority site.
Boaz Sasson | SEO | קידום אתרים • Funny how the threads started by young women get so many thoughtful replies...Whenever you try to spam or scam links, nothing gets a higher stick rate then a female persona. That is my tip for higher pagerank.

María Cascante • This is awesome!!! A lot of great advises! I have a lot to do now thanks to you! This is good! I really appreciate your help!!!
Thanks a million! :)
B K • Great suggestions/discussion. You can also start with building back links for your site. If in need of remote assistance, feel free to contact/message me.
Vikas Dhiman • I am practicing SEO like a habit now and have followed different methods on link building. Couple of years ago Google would not mind if we over optimize a keyword and even get a back link from low PR website but now, this practice does not work anymore. We need great content now, so the visitors come again and again to our website, get to link with us. For submissions also we need unique content with proper keyword density and it should be submitted on high PR relevant sites only. Guest Posts, Press Release, Squidoo Lens, Blog, Hub Page are some of the fine things where we can post our content and get back links.
I would like to know what members here think about 3 Tier Link Building method. I have been using this strategy to make backlinks for one project and believe me I got result in one month.
Rakesh Ojha • With latest Penguin updates in few weeks from Google, you can expect more firework.
Vikas Dhiman • Yes Rajesh, its true even would like to add that Google has been telling us about the updates when it's going to be. Now, they won't be intimating us before updating so, we need to keep ourselves updated and understand what is required from us to get things right.
Aamir Iqbal • create quality and unique content to your site. Google love those site which have quality and information content ..dnt forget to social media as well its help you to get direct traffic
