Highly recommend you hire someone (SEO company) to make sure your websites "backend" is agreeable for google and web crawlers. Also have them research the key words you should focus on. Start a blog on the topic and you should see your rankings greatly improve. You can do much more SEO but the above is the fundamentals find a SEO company that is willing to teach you the critical parts you need and just as importantly can afford.

Alexandra Shkalikova • Congratulations on your startup! As everyone's already said, you need content that is valuable to people. However this alone rarely brings in top rankings (unless you're probably Wikipedia). In a few words, the steps would be: 
1) Research keywords to find the ones that are not too competitive (i.e. Easier to outrank other sites) and that are still quite frequently searched. 

2) Use these keywords in your site's content. Sometimes you're even creating pages with the main purpose of targeting certain groups of keywords (but useful to visitors, of course).

3) Try to get links to your pages. These should be all kinds of links, text links and images. Also many of them should use your keywords in the anchor text (the visible text of the link) yet many should be just "naked" URL or links like "click here", "learn more" etc. 

4) In the meantime, it would be useful to create a sitemap and submit it to search engines (search for "submit site to Yahoo" for example) to get your site indexed. 

5) Another thing to look at is structure, coding, HTTP response codex and other issues that might be important for the site's indexation and rankings. 

If you need some initial guidance on all these aspects the best place to refer to is SEO in Practice here http://www.seoinpractice.com It doesn't give you in-depth advice, but it's an ideal one to get you going and explain things clearly and tell you what to do, step by step.

kevin Bunn • When i started my business in 2007 i did not know where to start regarding SEO , so my advise would be to shop around and find yourself a good company to manage your advertising,people used to say to me "you should do it yourself its easy" but its only easy if your in front of a computer all day long, personally i have to be on site wining work. Rakesh Ojha • Being a start up your focus should be on your business and how to grow. Initially your business requires a push and if you were to hire a SEO agency, it would give you that push. 

Replying solely on your SEO won't help much in the long run.

peter ogilvie • If you want to understand how it all works then (as other have said) read chapter by chapter of the http://www.seoinpractive.com online book - it will detail all you need to know. 
Then look at something like powersuite - http://www.link-assistant.co.uk - you need to do these things - in depth Keyword Research , make sure your site is optimised for those keywords and then look at the competition to see where they get links from. 
Also something which is much more relevant -in my opinion - is social media - use something like buzzbundle to find out where your potential customers are - and then engage with them. 
By the way - above all else - make sure your site is relevant and up to date and delivers what customers want - otherwise visitors that arent happy wont purchase and potential sales wont convert to actual sales - but I'm sure you know that already - good luck with it all - hope it goes great for you. 
ps - I would add - although increasing Page Rank is good - it's not the end of the world if it doesnt. Sales conversions are the bottom line.

Martin Miller • First decision needs to be how involved you want to be in improving your sites page rank. If SEO isn't your main area of expertise then why would you even think about covering it yourself. I never work on my car, I've never spent years learning how to, I just stick it in the garage when it needs servicing. 
Then what do you mean by page rank? Google SERPS rank or Google PR? 
What is the goal for your web site? Do you want to sell something, attract new email subscribers, get your point of view over to as large an audience as possible? As with all planning, start with the goal and the planning becomes a lot easier and a lot less like guess work. 
What search terms are you looking to rank well for? Choosing the right search terms/keywords to go after is the main part of the battle. Choosing more specific less general search terms allows you to rank your pages a little easier. (Think rank for dog training for Alsatian pups as opposed to dogs). Careful planning in this area with a professional will set you up for successful rankings. 
Page rank requires good relevant content, good site structure (interlinking pages), good on page SEO, good of page SEO (good backlinking) and most of all a good SEO professional to keep this all going while you concentrate on running your business and making enough money to afford the good SEO professional! :)

John Clarke • Maria, there's a lot of good information here and some are recommending services that they provide. 

But there are new businesses that do not have the start up funds to start in the ideal world, only you will know the many factors. 

I know of a website that is listed on the first page of Google for many search terms (key words), it didn't have any links to it (for a year, it now does), with a PR of zero, one page only, didn't use any social media. So it broke many SEO things that people say you must do (at the time). 

It did have a good url, the content was about one subject, there was a sitemap (one url), robots.txt file, favicon and it played by the rules, the search engine rules.

In fairness, the site was something people were interested in and searching for but there were not the 10,000 other sites all trying to present the same content. 

Keep up your research, don't chase the latest trends, keep to the basics, build a good site with good content. Monitor your site with Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics. 

As your business grows bring in the people with the knowledge that you don't have.

a year and a half, so I can only tell you what's worked an not worked for 
us. Are you writing content yet? Articles about chess, chess strategy, 
history of chess, chess resources, current events that relate to chess etc? 
I know this isn't meant to be the point of your website, but optimized 
content is one major way that new traffic finds you.

Chad VanCalster • I haven't read all the replies, but I've been doing SEO since the 90's and I can tell you we haven't seen a shift as big as what's happening now.

If you want to get found: Content, Content, Content. Focus on driving traffic and building your social media brand. Those will trump all others.

We focus on traffic - and Page Rank is a byproduct of good traffic.

Doing SEO starts with making a SEO friendly website so your first step to look in your website and to analyse if you have used proper Title ,description, Tags etc.You can easily find the method to do proper on page on Google.. After it , you need to look who all are you competitors and from where they are getting traffic, what all keywords they are ranking on. Once you finalized the keywords and understand the target audience then you can use back linking, blogs , articles etc as described by people above.The only thing you need to make sure , you should have activity list handy before you start doing SEO so that you can follow them religiously. SEO is a continuous process so you need to be patient and keep on doing efforts , I am sure you get start getting results.

Lee Benning • I haven't read everyone of the tips above, but here's 5 quick ones to get you going: 

1. Search for [google keyword tool] and use that to see which phrases have the highest search volumes 
2. Use the keywords with the highest volumes in the <title> tags of RELEVANT web pages 
3. Create an XML sitemap (search online for [xml sitemap generator]) and upload to your web server 
4. Create a Google and Bing Webmaster Tools account and submit your XML sitemap 
5. Submit your URL to relevant web directories - search for [seo web directory list] to find a list of web directories

John McCarthy • Congratulations Maria, If you just started a business that means you have a lot to do. You could gather a lot of SEO advice (such as you are attempting here) and begin to put those suggestions into place but that will take a lot of your time so you will not be doing what you need to do for your business to succeed. Yes, SEO is one of those things that needs doing but the other things like, establishing a business plan and working it, establishing a corporate marketing plan and working it, establishing vendor services, establishing a customer/client database. There are way more things you should be spending time doing than you will be spending on SEO. So how do you succeed on the web when you are busy doing all those other things? Find and hire a trustworthy, dependable, hardworking 3rd party provider who knows what you need, understands your marketing plan and does nothing else but eat, sleep, live and die by their reputation as a web marketing provider. It may cost more than is comfortable up front but in the long run you will succeed and keep succeeding. Don't look for a cheap quick solution either, go for someone who takes the time to understand your needs and put a plan together to succeed. Good luck on your new business venture and good luck finding a reputable, hard working, no short cuts 3rd party web marketing vendor.

That's a great market to get into right now. People need content, therefore need people to write it for them. 

My advice is you need to write creatively, especially when it comes to titling your articles and writing your Tweets/Facebook posts. The Good/Bad of such a need for good content, is there is lots of good content already out there, as other businesses are doing it too. To add value to your clients, you need to write to get their content heard above the noise.

This is a huge area you are entering into and my advice is to enter cautiously. Before you consider hiring a vendor to perform SEO for your company, it's important to educate yourself somewhat. 

There are still a lot of vendors and SEOs that are executing less than safe and definitely not at all safe practices when it comes to things like linkbuilding, article submission etc. Anyone who makes promises or guarantees is someone to steer clear of. 

There are many aspects to SEO including: on-site optimization, content marketing, social media, PPC, analytics and many aspects within each of those. 

I recommend going to http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo and reading their beginner instruction guides to get a general lay of the land. You can also consider joining seomoz and learn even more as well as getting reports of your site's performance etc.

I rebuilt the site on Wordpress and I've only added some of the old content after doing a rewrite. However, when I began syndicating content, the site jumped over 2 million sites, the average time spent on the site is sixteen minutes. Vikas Dhiman • SEO is subject in itself and you will come across blogs, forums, articles and more that talks about strategies, methods, do's and don'ts. We all have different perspective on how SEO should be done. As per my experience, it should be as natural as promoting a product in a normal manner. I believe that is what Google is looking for now. Like you all said unique content this is one part but where your links are coming from? How are you making them to make your presence? These things plays an important role too. I believe while doing SEO concentrate making links on High PR sites. It would take time but your patience will get its "Treat."

Your own unique content is important, but curating relevant content has proven to me to drive traffic and keep visitors on the site longer. It's hard for a website owner to come up with all their own unique content and then syndicate it. Adding curated content that keeps people on your site longer by enriching the overall experience I believe is a key factor to developing reader interest and becoming an authority site.

Vikas Dhiman • I am practicing SEO like a habit now and have followed different methods on link building. Couple of years ago Google would not mind if we over optimize a keyword and even get a back link from low PR website but now, this practice does not work anymore. We need great content now, so the visitors come again and again to our website, get to link with us. For submissions also we need unique content with proper keyword density and it should be submitted on high PR relevant sites only. Guest Posts, Press Release, Squidoo Lens, Blog, Hub Page are some of the fine things where we can post our content and get back links. 
I would like to know what members here think about 3 Tier Link Building method. I have been using this strategy to make backlinks for one project and believe me I got result in one month.
